A Parent’s Guide to Senior Portraits

You’ve Got Questions. We’ve Got Answers.

There’s a lot to know about senior year. It can be both confusing and exciting for you and your seniors. As a father myself, I remember having a lot of questions about my son’s senior year at Glen Ridge High School… college hunting (6 colleges in days!), SAT’s, FAFSA forms, senior trip, graduation, etc. This period is demanding, and we aim to make the senior portrait part a smooth, enjoyable, and memorable experience.
This time next year, you will likely be getting prepared for graduation, and soon, dropping your daughter or son off at college! Your house is likely to be just a bit emptier, sooner than you think. I remember how tough that can be. Senior portraits are more than just pictures; they are tangible memories of this precious, fleeting time.
What’s your story? For your Montclair, Glen Ridge area Senior Pictures, we want to capture more than what you look like. We want to capture who you are. These are the photographs that will represent your youth for the rest of your life! We see each session as a celebration of their journey and unique spirit before the next chapter.
Sami has been serving the Northern New Jersey area since 2004, and is the only independent photographer dedicated to senior high school photography. This specialization means we understand the local schools, trends, and, most importantly, how to make seniors feel comfortable and shine.

Before The Session

Planning ahead is key to a successful and stress-free senior portrait experience. This section covers common questions about yearbook requirements, optimal timing for sessions, how our services work, pricing, and our unique retouching policies before your child even steps in front of the camera. We also offer some fun tools to help with inspiration!

No, you don’t. It’s against the law in New Jersey for the school to force students to use the school contractor. New Jersey is an “open yearbook state,” meaning public schools must accept yearbook photos from any photographer, provided they meet the school’s specifications. Many parents are unaware of this right!
We are knowledgeable about these requirements and ensure your chosen photo meets all guidelines for schools like Montclair High School, Glen Ridge High School, Verona, and surrounding areas. This gives you the freedom to choose a photographer who can truly capture your child’s personality, rather than settling for a generic school portrait. We are your advocate in this process!

Senior portraits are ideally taken during the spring and summer BEFORE the start of your child’s senior year. We can’t stress this enough! Booking early (even 3-6 months in advance) is highly recommended.
Why the early timing?
• Yearbook Deadlines:
Most schools require yearbook photos in the Fall, often before Thanksgiving. Completing portraits well before Labor Day ensures your senior isn’t left out.
Senior Year Schedules: Once senior year starts, schedules fill up incredibly fast with college applications, SATs, extracurriculars, and social events. Getting portraits done early removes one major item from that busy list.
Optimal Weather & Locations: Spring and summer offer beautiful outdoor options. Fall foliage sessions are popular but book up very quickly.
Reduced Stress: Planning ahead means a more relaxed experience for everyone, allowing more time for creativity and ensuring you get the session date you prefer.
Think of it as a proactive step to a stress-free senior year component. We’re here to help you plan effectively!

We believe in transparency and flexibility. There are two main components to our pricing:
The Session Fee: This covers the photographer’s time and talent for the photo session itself, professional assistance in selecting your yearbook photo immediately after your session (approx. 10-15 min extra), our expert retouching of your chosen yearbook image, and its submission to the school yearbook staff. The session fee is paid in advance to secure your appointment. You can typically book online or call us. If you need to reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice.
Prints & Products: After your session, you’ll choose the images you love and decide how you want to preserve them. There are no minimum purchase requirements. You can purchase prints à la carte or take advantage of our “CAP” (Create-A-Package) system.
Our “CAP” (Create-A-Package) System:

For our Class of 2025 seniors (and beyond!), our CAP system offers ultimate flexibility. Instead of being locked into pre-set packages, you choose the specific items and prints you want to build a package that fits your needs and budget. It’s about getting what you truly desire. We’re happy to explain this in detail and show you examples during a studio visit, where you can also get a printed price list.

We will professionally retouch your chosen photo, crop it to meet all national and specific school yearbook standards, and submit it directly to Montclair High School, Glen Ridge High School, Verona, or other surrounding area schools on your behalf, well before the deadline. We’re happy to discuss requirements for any other schools as well. It’s part of our commitment to a hassle-free experience.

Our retouching philosophy is to make your senior look their absolute best, naturally. We believe in authentic, human artistry.
NO AI RETOUCHING. EVER. All retouching is meticulously done by Sami himself. We will never submit your child’s image to an AI engine. This protects their likeness from being used or potentially misused across the web and ensures the final portrait is a true representation, enhanced with a professional human touch, not an algorithm. Your privacy and the authenticity of your images are paramount to us.

Our Unique Offerings

At Studio Sami, we believe senior year is a journey worth capturing from start to finish. Discover our special offerings designed to make your senior’s portrait experience truly comprehensive, memorable, and reflective of their entire milestone year.

Why limit the memories to just one shoot? Sami seniors can keep coming back all year long, adding additional “Boomerang” mini photo-shoots. Let us capture the full story of their entire senior year!

How It Works:

Your first photo shoot is your main session. This typically covers the official yearbook picture, cap & gown photos, images for mom’s wall, and other basic needs. From this session, you’ll select images to be included in your “Photo Album.”
Why Come Back with Boomerang Sessions?
Seasonal Variety: Add a fall mini-shoot with colorful foliage, or a winter snow shoot for a magical touch.
Capture Activities: If your senior plays spring sports, we can capture action shots or team spirit in season.
Special Events: Don’t forget prom! Document that glamorous look with a dedicated mini-shoot.
Tell the Full Story: Senior year is full of changes and milestones. Boomerang sessions let you keep adding to their story.
Boomerang mini shoots are affordably priced at only $49 each. After each mini-shoot, you can order what you want to add to your Photo Album. Your main Photo Album order can go on hold, but you still get your chosen digitals from each session to share right away (perfect for “Senior Sunday” posts!). Then, later in the year, once all your Boomerang sessions are complete, we finalize and print your beautiful, custom Photo Album, telling the complete story of their senior year!
* Boomerang Mimi session available only for Premium session and Yearbook Plus session.

During The Session: The Experience

The photo session itself is where the magic happens! We focus on creating a relaxed, fun, and personalized experience. This section addresses common questions to ensure you and your senior know exactly what to expect and how to prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable time.

Session length varies by the package chosen, ensuring we have ample time to capture a variety of great shots without rushing:
Premium Session: Up to 3 hours. This allows for multiple locations and outfit changes. We often recommend splitting this into two separate days, especially if incorporating an outdoor portion, to make the most of lighting and energy levels.
Yearbook Plus Session: About 1.5 hours. This session is indoor-only and includes the yearbook shots plus one extra outfit for more variety.
Yearbook Complete Session: About 30 minutes. Focused and efficient, covering yearbook and cap & gown photos only.

Sure! Sometimes it helps to have a familiar face there – a friend, sibling, or parent – to help your senior relax, laugh, and feel more like themselves. While Sami will be concentrating on capturing the best portraits, your guest is more than welcome. It’s always nice to have someone standing behind Sami for support, but just warn them that they might be put to work holding a reflector or making your senior smile!

Absolutely! Outfit changes are a great way to showcase different aspects of your senior’s personality.
Yearbook Plus Session: Feel free to bring 1–2 different clothing changes.
Premium Session: Plan for 4–5 different outfits to get a wide variety of looks.
Props are highly encouraged! Think about items that represent their hobbies, sports, talents, or future plans – a musical instrument, sports equipment, favorite books, art supplies, college pennant, etc. These help tell their unique story.
We also have a “Senior Style Guide” with more detailed suggestions on styling, hair, makeup, and what to bring. We’ll share this with you upon booking!

Please don’t worry! It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous. Sami is an expert at making seniors feel comfortable and at ease. We’ll guide them through poses and expressions, ensuring they look natural and confident. Our goal is a fun, relaxed session!
As for temporary blemishes like a zit – that’s what professional retouching is for! We can expertly retouch any temporary skin concerns on the images selected for the yearbook or prints. Those little imperfections will disappear, so your senior can focus on enjoying the experience.

Unsure what to wear for your senior portraits? (e.g., “sporty and casual,” “elegant and timeless,” “artistic and edgy,” “music lover,” “bookworm”). remember to also check our “Senior Style Guide” for more tips.

Yes, you receive complimentary social media sized digital images of every unique pose you order as a print from. These are perfect for sharing online with friends and family but are not formatted or licensed for printing.
Our commitment to uncompromising quality is why we handle all our printing. For over 20 years, Studio Sami has believed that if a portrait has our name on it, it must be perfect and made to last. The only way to maintain and control that exceptional quality—from color accuracy to archival longevity—is to manage the printing process from A to Z.
This policy isn’t about restricting files; it’s about guaranteeing the final artwork you receive (your prints, albums, wall art) meets our highest artistic standards and truly represents the care and expertise invested in your session. Consumer labs simply cannot match the calibration and quality control of a professional studio. The social media digitals are a bonus for easy sharing, while your physical prints are the timeless, heirloom-quality pieces.
